Once a habitat is created in the grounds of a school it needs management to ensure it stays in good condition.
The Essex Outdoor team offer a practical conservation maintenance service and management advice to ensure your conservation area flourishes to benefit staff, pupils and wildlife. e.g.
All trees and hedge plants grow best if kept weed free in the first few years of their lives.
Hedge plants may die if smothered by coarse grasses and weeds.
Trees, especially fruit trees, may need to be pruned, have dead wood removed and stakes and ties checked to maintain healthy growth as well as the required size and shape.
Willows are fast growing trees. Producing a tunnel, dome or sculpture requires weaving, tying in, shaping or pruning at least once a year.
A wildflower area left unmanaged will revert to coarse grasses and dominant invasive plants resulting in a loss of more attractive and beneficial species
