Courses for Schools
Daws
Hall and Pelham provide outdoor classrooms offering a menu of environmental
programmes linked to the curriculum. At Key Stages 1 and 2 (primary schools),
many of the most popular days are related to Science topics, often to do with
habitats and plant science, or Geography.
However there is still much scope for a
cross-curricular approach with opportunities for literacy and numeracy, art and
information technology.
In addition we always provide that element of true
environmental education which can not be provided in the indoor classroom; firsthand
experience of wildlife and the countryside. We also try to emphasise the
importance of environmental responsibility and stewardship and maintenance of
biodiversity. The Eco-Centre scheme is a good example of how this can be
integrated into the day.
We
also welcome KS3 groups, and at GCSE and A level Daws Hall can help to deliver
the fieldwork component of examination courses. Often this enables students to
carry out their own practical investigation, which is assessed and counts
towards their final mark. Feedback from teachers indicates the high standards
achieved and the value they place on our contribution.
Experienced
teachers and outdoor instructors for Essex Outdoors will lead your day. More
than one instructor may be available to help the school with their visit,
particularly with larger groups.
Above
all we try to make all school visits enjoyable and rewarding; not just another
school trip, but a day or days which should make a lasting impression.

Other courses and visits
While
school visits right through the academic year provide the bulk of our
visitors we also play host to a few
teachers' courses, the weekend natural history course series and non-school
groups e.g. scout and youth groups. We can also organise guided walks for local
Conservation and general interest groups. During the winter months especially,
Centre staff take equipment and expertise into the schools, with tree planting
projects and other supporting activities for teaching in the school grounds.
Charges
Fees range from £150 per day to £350 per day for primary school groups of up to 60
(Pelham only). Some younger groups may wish to visit for a half day at a
reduced cost. Secondary school rates are higher starting at £200 per day. Click here for a full breakdown.
Courses
can be self led, with guidance from staff and with equipment provided. To do this
you would need to arrange a pre-visit to discuss your requirements.
We
levy no charge for teachers and other adults; many schools see this as informal
INSET for their staff. Other adults accompanying primary schools have an
invaluable role in leading small group work.
Health and Safety
Instructors
at the Daws Hall and Pelham Centres take all reasonably practical steps to
secure the health, safety and welfare of everyone who visits the premises in an
organised party.
We
follow the Essex County Council 'Safe practice on educational, adventurous and recreational
visits code of practice 28'. From these we have also formulated our own specific
policy and code of practice and risk assessments.
All
Centre teaching staff carry an appropriate first aid kit, mobile phone and
safety equipment and are qualified First Aiders. Working with visiting members
of staff we accept responsibility for the group from the point of
disembarkation until visitors are back in coaches or minibuses.
