ESD and the National Curriculum
The
National Curriculum acknowledges that education is a route to
equality of opportunity for all, to a healthy and just democracy, to a
productive economy, and to sustainable development. Sustainable development is
also included in the values, aims and purposes of the National Curriculum. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has an important role in the
Citizenship curriculum and ideas are prominent within subjects like Geography. 'Geography plays a significant
part in promoting education for sustainable development through: developing
pupils' knowledge and understanding of key concepts of sustainable development,
such as interdependence, quality of life and diversity'.
Eco-Centre Status
For many years we have managed the Environmental
Education Centres with environmental concerns in mind and have tried to
incorporate some of these issues into our teaching programmes. For example we
buy and use recycled products, recycle items from lunch boxes, try to reduce
our electricity use and demonstrate the idea of a sustainable resource by
producing and using composted meadow cuttings as an alternative to the use of
peat based products.
In 2002 (Pelham) and 2004 (Daws Hall) our Centres
were awarded Eco-Centre status. The Eco-Centre scheme is designed to encourage
and acknowledge whole-centre action for the environment. It is designed to make
environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of
our centres for all of its staff and visitors.
Both Centres have an Eco-Code, have carried audits
of current practice and through an Action Plan continue to strive towards targets
of improved environmental performance! Click here for our Eco-Code.
As Education Centres we
believe that it important to share our ideas with all our visitors. We
prominently display information about our environmental policy and performance
and provide information on what you can do at home and in school. We are keen
to promote the Eco-Schools scheme and may be able to offer help to get started.
Eco-Schools
This scheme was originally a European initiative
developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe and is
managed in the UK by the Tidy Britain Group.
Eco-Schools is an '…Europe-wide project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole-school
action for the environment. The scheme offers a well-defined, controllable way
for you to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the
day-to-day running of your school. This process will help your pupils recognise
the importance of environmental issues and take them more seriously in their
personal and home lives.'
Like the Eco-Centre scheme, Eco-Schools is both a
programme and an award scheme. For more information contact the Centre or go to
