Volunteering with Essex Outdoors

Essex Outdoors has a number of volunteering opportunities at its centres. These can qualify for Duke of Edinburgh's Award residentials and other accredited volunteering schemes.

International Camp
2 to 15 August 2010

If you’re aged 16 to 21 and would like to meet over 200 young people from over 8 different countries, then the Mersea Centre is looking for Essex young people to join them for its International Camp.

International Camp has been running for over 60 years and has a reputation for establishing life long friendships. Young people are expected from countries including China, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands and  Spain.

During the camp the young people take part in a two-week programme of adventurous activities, workshops, off site visits and evening entertainment. It is just the place to spend the summer if you would like to experience the unique blend of culture and activity, with the chance to brush up on your language skills.

Each year we have a Service Team of Essex young people who carry out various duties throughout the programme. But this doesn't mean that they miss out on any of the fun! Duties can include helping Village Leaders deliver activities, preparing the entertainment areas or running the dining room. This experience can also be used for participants to gain the residential section for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The normal camp fee is £399 but in return for their help Service Team members pay a subsidised camp fee of £50.

Mersea Island Festival

22 to 27 August 2010
27 to 30 August 2010

Plans are under way for another packed programme of activities at the end of August and as ever we need a team of volunteer staff, aged 16+, to help us deliver the Festival.

The Festival aims to bring together young people with or without a physical or learning disability and over 300 people attend the camps to try out new activities, make new friends and have loads of fun! Our volunteers make sure that all our campers have a great time.

You’ll have the chance to make new friends, to make a difference to other people’s lives and the satisfaction that you’ve helped others to build their self confidence and esteem. And if you’re doing your Gold D of E Award, volunteering at the Festival qualifies for the residential section.

We’re not necessarily looking for prior experience but if you’ve worked with young people or those with special needs before, it will be useful. Regardless of which camp they are volunteering for, all volunteers are required to attend a briefing and training day on Saturday 21st August. You will need to complete a ‘Disclosure of criminal convictions’ form and a Disclosure will be sought from the Criminal Records Bureau. Confirmation of a volunteer place will only be given after satisfactory checks have been completed. We don’t charge our volunteers to come to the Festival but ask that you try to raise some sponsorship.
